Medical Student Rotation

Our medical student rotation welcomes applicants from around the country to participate as external rotators. The most popular months for external rotators are June through December. As part of our commitment to local medical schools, students from Florida State University and the University of Central Florida rotate with our department every month.

At ORMC, fourth year medical students can participate in an active student curriculum with a dedicated teaching resident.  The teaching resident is a senior resident who guides, educates, and assists rotating medical students. Medical students attend the bi-weekly resident conference.  There is also a core lecture series exclusively for medical students dealing with problems relevant to an emergency physician in-training. The resident conference is 7-9:30 am twice a week, followed by faculty-led medical student lectures.

Students are scheduled to work 15 eight-hour clinical shifts, including the option for one EMS ride-along, under the one-on-one supervision of our clinical attending staff. Students present directly to the teaching resident and/or attending, and are responsible for the entire care of their patients. Students are also afforded the opportunity to perform numerous procedures throughout their shifts. These shifts are primarily in the adult Emergency Department, but do include several shifts in the pediatric Emergency Department at Arnold Palmer Hospital, a level 1 pediatric trauma center.   As part of the rotation, students have one day of dedicated ultrasound experience. 

Housing and food arrangements are available for rotating students. Students are given meal vouchers for each shift.

We have affiliations with all of the LCME accredited medical schools in Florida and are the primary site for the FSU School of Medicine Orlando campus as well as for the UCF College of Medicine students.

Please be aware that the Emergency Medicine Residency Application Review Committee at Orlando Regional Medical Center will review your application for PGY -1 residency training at our hospital in conjunction with your rotation experience.  Acceptance for a student externship in Emergency Medicine does not guarantee that you will be granted an interview for Emergency Medicine residency training.
